make overview of chapters for this afternoon:
as a foundation, for understanding. principles, way of thinking.
then, autumn medicine. on our inner nature, on the element. what autumn means within our body.
some imbalances, some herbs for balancing out.
in between short breaks -- tasting tea in silence
after -- share some handsful of herbal oils, steam inhalation I prepared.
make tea breaks in silence in between!!
give them a question to think about in between! (so they don´t get destracted, interrupt the atmosphere, talk about something else)
perhaps think about how you feel differently in autumn - even if its just nuances. if some signs appear more strongly.
if you can resonate with some of the signs, or if it makes you think of a friend, family member.
do things you experience get worse with dryness
this time first part - talk a bit about poetry/translations/metaphors (skin, vessels, lungs, bark,...)
then more serious
than autumn medicine

little thoughts:
I don´t love talking in front of many people, but I love talking about herbs, tea, medicine, (food, nutrition)
and about finding ways to connect and combine them.
there are thoughts that I feel like sharing. words I have written throughout late summer.
I would like to give a little insight into my mind, the best way to do it — through writing, then sharing these words and notes.
again, like last time (spring, summer, late summer) a talk - reading (of notes, thoughts, words) - like a sketchbook, very raw.
perhaps just take it in, listen, doesn´t have to make sense, just to get a feeling for it.
together with
pure herbs grown and treated with care. handpicked from a garden, a forest, a farm.
local. or wild from places I hold connection to (croatia, portugal).
I love connecting with what is growing around us.
locality is very precious, but herbs that grow where nature has seeded them are often even more precious, especially in terms of their medicinal value. for me its about finding a balance.
my mind tends to think in connections, making something more whole, understanding the root pattern underneath. and the branches.
why I feel such a connection to traditional eastern medicine - because these are exactly the principles it is based on. so many nature´s metaphors.
not only thinking about how can we balance and protect nature around us, but we are also nature - balancing these aspects within our bodies.
we can only take care of our loved ones and the soil and our produce if we take care of ourselves and each others bodies too. should happen in rhythm with the seasons.
but I realized I align much more with eastern traditional principles - because that´s how my mind had started to think naturally over time.
she is very knowledgable. she said: “knowing the body, knowing the plant.” so combining both is like making art to me.
for me traditional medicine is art and nature.
I see the herbs I have with me, as a reflection of who I am, where I go, what I experience and learn.
I see the person through sensing, perceiving, connecting, seeing a pattern.
not only what’s sensible and visible from the outside of a person(symptoms), but what´s going on and needs balance inside.
I like to think of the body, the person as a garden:
— for example comparison to soil that needs moisture after too much dryness, drought
too much dryness, will affect the lung, showing in a dry cough
just like cracked dehydrated earth - cracked, dry skin, loss of body fluids
(autumn)
winter slows down and causes contraction.
too much coldness will freeze, leading to stiffness and pain of bones and joints.
(winter)
too much Wind will bring unrest and irritation of the Liver, something like dizziness, and disrupting the peace of inner circulation.
(spring)
too much heat (of the heart) will dry the soil out, Blood gets dry, tissues not nourished. inflammation.
tendency of heat to move towards the surface - reminds of our body sweating <3
(summer)
like a soil that needs to be drained when there is too much rain and dampness - like a tissue that has to much stagnated moisture, accumulated fluids (swelling, odema, coated tongue in the middle).
“the doctor as a gardener: prepares the soil (tissues), sows the seeds, waters, removes weeds (toxins, accumulated fluids, metabolic waste products), placing plants in the right relation to each other (organ networks)”
what I was thought in modern, conventional medicine - anatomy, pathology, ..
western herbal medicine
but rooted in traditional far eastern principles -
local (western) herbs (high quality, natural), nutrition
personal experience
- translating (I like to call it translating) between these elements
putting together, integrating all the little pieces of what I learned and experienced over the years.
— helping to translate the language of our bodies.
no one knows your body better than you do, but someone can support in translating.
I´m learning every day, its endless, I´m forever a student.
because we live here,
nature gives us everything we need
a few words on traditional eastern medicine
5 elements: wood, fire, earth, metall, water
5 organ networks: liver, heart, spleen, lungs, kidneys
5 climates: wind, heat, moisture, dryness, cold
5 emotions: anger, joy, worry, grief, fear
last time late summer medicine and the spleen, toda autumn medicine and the lungs
so autumn is the organ network lungs, the element metal, the climate dryness, emotion grief
its very very very complex, dynamic -- today the simplest foundation.
but still in the end it all comes back to this foundation.
reminding us that the seasons, elements, climates are present within our bodies too <3
my words and our conversations today hopefully serve as a reminder for that
about yin and yang
about Blood, Moisture, Qi.
about organ networks, channels
about adverse, inner climates.
just simplified today.
they fuse, interact, with each other.
like yin and yang.
1.seeing through the body - Diagnosis!
2.connecting signs, symptoms
3.complementing with right herbs, nutrition chosen for the person and their pattern
note: today focus mostly on herbs
most important — diagnosis!!
what herbs do is what comes last/easiest!
not just duality -- not just either or -- but also all things in between.
patterns of imbalance.
too much or too little. (instead of something is wrong).
Fülle oder Leere
fullness or emptiness
exaggeration or collapse
views illness as an imbalance of organ networks and of body constituents (blood, moisture, Qi).
because everything within the body is connected, its never really just one symptom/sign/imbalance someone experiences, but several (especially long term) — which we might not think are related here — but these are interconnected symptom patterns
“a simple excess or deficiency of one organ network persisting over time turns into complex patterns of disharmony”
a depletion/deficiency, exaggeration, congestion/stagnation, retention,…
weakness, paleness, fatigue, are signs of a depletion
vs
cramps, tension, heaviness are signs of a congestion
all organs and organ systems are understood as being connected. so when in balance, organ networks should be supporting each other.
if there is too much/too little of one -> brings the other organ network in a specific sequence out of balance as well. about how they work together/support/compensate each other or suppress/overcontrol/drain each other.
whether they antagonize, instead of complementing each other. if friction instead of tension.
this is what Sheng & Ke sequences are about.
Th: putting together formulas (and nutrition) that harmonize these relationships
everybody has their predominant root organ network, element, type - but that also means that it is the most vulnerable one (most prone to imbalance).
we are ever changing yet we have a type and thus, predispositions, weak points, vulnerabilities, sensibilities.*
patho: and from that root, different branches of imbalance may originate, leaves - almost like a tree - gets very complex.
Dia: the more time passes, the more intertwined everything becomes, the harder it is to look deeper, see the roots.
Th: taking care of the roots, branches and leaves ....different layers. I like to compare it to a tree:
root - deeper within (for example dampness in the organ tissues)
branches - syndroms, connected signs of organ networks
leaves - for example (dry skin) what we usually notice
a symptom may seem to have gone away, but the pattern shifts, to other extreme (when exaggeration leads to collapse) its dynamic.
all signs that come together into a patternultimately if exaggeration over longer period of time -> eventually leads to collapse (pattern gets even more complex).
1.problems along Ke sequence => exaggerated patterns
2.problems along Sheng sequence => collapsed patterns
especially when defences are weakened, resources exhausted
its not just about the body, tissues, organ systems,... but also the mind and emotions, the spirit, the type (personality), constitution, behavior that are part of making up a pattern.
for example experiencing intense grief will affect the lung network or anger will affect the liver network - also the other way around - imbalanced kidney network will lead to feelings of fear, imbalanced liver network to anger
in the west: your lab results may show normal kidney function,
but you might still not feel good because you are experiencing coldness, tiredness, lower back pain, missing periods, inflammed joints (arthritis) and dulled hearing - which all reflect a weakening of water/kidney in eastern medicine.
why do signs better/worsen during certain seasons, times of day, in particular climates,....
why does one person feel / have a condition that is hot and dry in the midst of the wet and cold winter, eg:
hot person: prone to fever, inflammation (yellow, green mucous),
cold person: experiences coldness (clear mucous)
hot person: arthritis/inflammation, pain of joints
cold person: tenderness, stiffness of muscles, joints.
give an example pattern someone could be experiencing.
the root organ network: the spleen (corresponding to late summer/earth)
but over time, depending on if there is too much or too little spleen, other signs affecting the other organ networks appear as well, because they are all connected:
anxiety (heart)
night sweating (heart)
excessive worry (spleen)
cold hands and feet (lung, liver)
stomach cramps (liver, spleen)
indigestion (spleen)
bloating (spleen)
neck tension (liver)
sensitivity to noise (kidney)
exhaustion (kidney)
inflammation of ear, eyes (liver)
worsening in the early morning and late evening (spleen)
missing, irregular periods (liver)
indeciciveness (liver)
chronic sinusitis, mucus congestion (lung)sores in mouth, on tongue (heart)
overly perfectionist (lung)
inflammation of the small intestine (heart)
forgetfulness, distraction, confusion, difficulties concentrating (heart)
being grateful for our body expressing these signs, also comes the guide to how to resolve them <3
many elements/organ networks affected,
deeply complex,
distance themselves from their natural element, it blurrs, (feel
disconnected from themselves).
its more difficult to see their natural root element.
inner storm, inner natural disasters, droughts, floodings,....
Difference dia, th - east and west:
accumulates over long time in cup in background, quietly - all our stresses, strains (alle Belastungen, etc.) - cup slowly fills with tea
imbalances within the body, without symptoms yet
wenn tea flows over = point when we feel symptoms — not a disease/disorder yet - then many years later if not bring back into balance.
eastern medicine:
catching imbalances in time and balancing out even before symptoms appear, but also when symptoms there, also when already disease
disharmonie kann rechtzeitig erkannt werden & ausgeglichen. durch chinesische Dia sehr früh erkennen!! ohne das Symptom dacan see the imbalance in time.
in westen:
if symptom -> needs to proven to be respected, acknowledged. something needs to be wrong in blood results, imaging. otherwise told everything is normal.
support (therapy)
to recover the balance of several organ systems affected.
through complementing. complementarity.
a herb combination can help us balance out our personal weak points, predispositions, climate, ... not trying to make something go away (we need all the seasons, all the climates, all the elements inside of our body) but to bring it closer to balance - eg if we tend to be cold / if there is coldness in our kidney -> warming herbs.
as it tends to be a pattern, not a single sign — you wouldn´t only take one herb. always combinations (especially if its over a period of time). its about how you combine them.
because its the combination that softens out and balances unwanted reactions, the herb in the combination should work together and complement each other, that way imbalances are supported on several levels
you create a synergy between the chosen herbs.
so translating symptoms and signs into patterns of disharmony, then matching them with the therapeutic properties of the herbs. the combination of herbs should be a perfect reflection of the condition and needs of a person. — what is meant when using the term “personalized”, as a pattern is personal, and complex.
note: I translate the ancient eastern herbs into local herbs, because I do really believe that nature provides us with everything we need, its growing around us.
counterbalancing <333 if lungs is excessive, strengthen the heart to counterbalance it (because the heart controls the lungs in the Ke sequence)
when lungs are deficient, strengthen the spleen to nurture it (because the spleen stengthens the lungs in the Sheng sequence)
also an important intention is to in support building resilience, adaptability and resistance to outer conditions, stressors
collecting resources in times of balance and peace - prevention (you also collect nuts, preserve food in autumn so you have enough for winter)
maintaining order (rather than correcting disorder).
its about sustainability and preserving.
“re-medie” - means back to the middle. “med-icine”
its about feeling betterbalancing out what we might have already accepted — that chronic neck pain, digestive discomfort, cold hands and feet,....
of course everbody has something. but if it keeps getting worse, goes to the extreme, impairs life.
deep, chronic, imbalances take longer and a lot more complex to treat.
if someone tends to naturally have moisture in the body (natural state),
and then moves to a moist climate place,
strong stagnations.
can support that adaptation with herbs.
for someone who has a condition rooted in coldness, especially will get worst in winter -> support preparing for and during winter, when symptoms worsen
you don´t think is chamomile good for you,
but you think “is chamomile suitable for that person, that pattern”. (not good if coldness in the stomach) or another example pear(moisturizing).
(bc soooo many different opinions in the western herbal medicine).
note:
difference if take herbs a few times vs if take longterm.
before we go into my favourite part, the late summer medicine and traditional eastern medicine part,
a little on my experience and thoughts on the difference in the way of thinking between conventional, modern medicine (that is often common here) and natural, herbal, traditional medicine:
but being aware that herbs and plants are the source of medicine, where modern medicine is rooted
but today synthetical production took over. only 1 constituent is being extracted, plant constituents are being changed, seperated from each other ,
vs
constituents of an herb are left together in their natural form. the constituents of the plant can work synergistically.
the same as with vegetables, soil, nutrition:
the difference between:
something natural. natural herbs, (their quality, how they were grown matter a lot) (give example chamomile or echinacea tincture austria)
vs
medication - something synthetic, harsh, foreign to the body. if you think about it.
of course you can learn anatomy, physiology, every known blood vessel and bone, hormone, nerves and cell reaction in your body by hard..(or even about each herb and their actions and constituents)
of course you can have the most modern devices and endless numbers of lab results.
but conventional medicine to me often felt like separation. (the mind being seperated from the body) (body parts, organ systems and organs from each other).* like fragments.
* seperation, and spezialization (neurology - the nerves; psychology - the mind, cardiology - the heart, blood vessels) (very important to have that, but in TCM its impossible to see one organ or one system seperately).
otherwise when you attempt to balance one system, you cause imbalance in another. it might work for a while, but then again, the next referral to the next specialist.
also, the principles and way of thinking modern medicine is based on, has little to do with nature.
harshly said the body is seen as a maschine. quick fixes are trying to be found.
people support and help, but nature heals.
the body naturally seeks towards balance.
supporting that instead of suppressing these mechanisms of the body.
also a cough, a fever, pain are all protective/healing mechanisms of our body. our body trying to get back into balance.
shouldn´t be ignored, or just suppressed, controled or covered.
otherwise further imbalances growing underneath, and reoccurent, long term signs develop.
when something feels wrong,
go to a doctor so he fixes it,
we hand the responsability to him.
but in the east its more about feeling, somone having a deeper look at your body, paying attention. because no one can know how it feels like, if they see you for a few minutes.
because if you suppress the signs of your body in an unnatural way (through medication),
you also loose the communication and connection,
you silence the language of your body
west, modern: acute, life threatening conditions, for emergency. for surgery. eg wound sepsis, infectious disease. so grateful.
(east or west: functional disorders)
eastern, traditional, natural approach: chronic degenerative conditions (which the world is full of nowadays, to balance out constant influence of toxins). for longterm and acute. as prevention AND cure <33.
or supportive or preventative - for small imbalances so they don´t become bigger & more complex
for getting to know your body for challanging times
experienced paediatric neurosurgery
- its just incredible what they do. very grateful for modern medicine.
everything has its place.
an example
another example:
listening, observing, feeling, sensing, about understanding, and seeing someone in their wholeness.
Diagnosis is a lot about using senses to see whats going on within <3 (although modern CT, MRT, is to be respected)
main difference: looking at ONE sign/symptom vs looking at signs TOGETHER/whole person
you look at pulse, tongue, abdomen, skin.
only 1 pulse that reflects the function of the heart, vs 6 locations of pulse at radial artery, TCM 28 pulse types (also position, shape, rhytmn, deep-superficial, layers, character) which reflect ALL organ networks, the whole body.
different types of cough <--> reflects body constituents within: show states of dryness, moisture, cold, heat
takes a deep sensibility, a sense for perceiving details, for connecting them
when i started seeing (my) sensitivity as strength
lungs:
thin, tight
like cotton - finger sinks in (stagnated lung Qi)
empty pulse in superficial level, slow
or
full, flooding, rapid, slippery
vs if here 3 people walk into a doctors room with a bad cough,
most likely everybody would walk out with the same perscription in their hand.
dryness in lungs:
no secretions at all
vsdampness, coldness in lungs:
transparent/clear, fluid
vs
heat in spleen: thicker consistancy/mucus, yellowish
<3 “reminding of holding/touching a piece of cotton”
shape, colour, part of the tongue, texture, fur,....gives you so much information
Qi of stomach/digestive fire
thick, white: dampness, moisture. deficiency. & cold. - lack of digestive fire.
along the edges
redness along the edges - inflammation, heat in liver
pale,
or
red/reddish,
pale pink with dry fur,
hint of redness at the front edges and tip
dry
mouth, throat feel dry
thick yellow coating (heat in the lungs)
white coat (cold in the lungs)
poor circulation <->/<3 stagnation of Qi or Blood in liver
chest
interior, inner
(eg heat in interior)
liver - sharp headache/migraine pain,
heart - chest pain
spleen - dull, beneath the ribs, stomach area
coarseness
lack of sweat
it´s not about the what somebody has, but about the how and why(its about the person who supports)
none of this is being considered in regular medicine
we are all the same, but also these nuances that are different
like different types of plants, trees. different needs.
west: often single herbs for one specific sign/symptom
east: combination of herbs for pattern/the whole condition of someone
depends a lot on the person who is supporting
so now my favourite part <3
also our bodies naturally function in rhythm with the seasons
elements for talk:
(same principles as with the body)
different energetics
(altough a cup of tea is hot, some herbs are warming, some cooling, some drying, some moisturizing for different parts of the body) depends on nature of the herb.
different affinities to organ networks
different actions
different parts of the herb
different way of extracting
acting deep or superficial finding complementary herbs for a person, a pattern that match
for example:
sage is cooling, marshmallow is moisturizing
nettle is warming and drying to the pelvis/womb, but cooling to blood and liver
summer
late summer
autumn
winter
corn
rye
rice
beans
rye(late summer) strengthens autumn/Lungs
skin, mucous membranes
hair
(sclera of the eye)
(sweat, mucus secretions)
disperse Ki, Blood
cool interior, warm extremities
regulate moisture, dryness
tonify Blood, consolidate Moisture
strengthen our protective outline
dispel Wind, loosen phlegm
dilation, expansion, releasing
opening, relaxing the chest
balanced breathing, deepen exhalation
skin - regulating Blood, Moisture in the skin (eig through acupuncture)
every organ is related to a time, “organ clock”
(large intestine: 5am-7am)
weakest 3pm - 5pm
(large intestine: 5pm - 7pm)
signs of deficiency show
when we want to support the lungs
eg waking up from a cough around that time.
lungs-liver
heart controls lungs,
lungs controls liver
for an lungs type, signs are likely to show up also in heart & in liver.
the more severe and long term, and the longer not taken care of, the further the signs move in the sequences, making it more complex.
(mother, child)
spleen -> lungs -> kidneys
spleen supports the lungs,
lungs supports the kidneys
= self-healing cycle
direction:
shrinking inward, contracting,
downwards
& through sweat release
appearance,
body scent
autumn people are not perceptible right away. naturally unscheinbar, still.
one needs to have a focus perception to perceive a autumn person.
nature:
fallen leaves (and fruit) return to the soil <3 , (already slowly preparing the soil for spring. (rotting fruit leaves behind its seeds).
the sap of the trees is drawn deep within its trunk and roots.
only what is needed, is stored.
transforms into warm tones of reds or browns.
/ becomes dry through the arrival of autumn.
when the soil, and our skin become dry.
withering/withers.
decay.
twilight/Dämmerung/dawn. -- the feeling of dawn coming closer.
the light begins to fade, the air becomes cooled. <3
when the soil becomes dried by autumn.
when everything returns beneath the ground,
covered with leaves wearing warm tones of reds and browns.
the season of returning. <3
when everything healing returns and gathers around the roots.
mornings and evenings carry a layer of dew, mist and sharp coolness. <3
time of withering, decay
only what is needed, is stored. -- process: reduction (metall is created through reduction -- gross, rough materials of nature are transfromed into pure Essence). when everything returns to its source, for later re-creation(in spring).
drawn inward.
preparing shelter for winter. (as shelters and resources are being prepared for winter, also need to prepare our bodies, internal warmth and resources).
gathering in, stocking up/pile/heaps/bundles of
nature:
colour: white
substance/matter: light, empty
white pale, like mornings, evenings of fog, mist, spider´s webs
everything, energy withdraws within
early yin <3
summer becomes quiet, preparation for the depths of winter
traditional symbol: a bird returning to its nest
Rückkehr/return
autumn equinox
like a sun setting in the west (direction: west)
after late summer - season of harvest of fruit and corn, abundance -> now the water is drawing back from the fruits. everything is drying out, becoming brittle, returns to the depths of the soil
when everything returns beneath a dry layer of the soil
(although everything seems to be covered in moisture, fog and mist - but if we have a closer look we realize that this moisture stays outside, it doesnt enter anymore, the soil/ground doesn´t absorb it any longer - like mud which can´t bear fruit anymore
like an already dried leaf that can´t no longer take up water
when the mist covers the outline /soil/ground from the outside, but our skin remains dry
collecting nuts, preserving fruit.
when the days become shorter,
<333
<3
that these are mirrored within the body as well.
then later when out of balance -- where then the opposite is the case
—
you will notice that its very different from spring/liver, heart/summer, spleen/late summer
rhythm, structure, form, order, definition, reason, priciples, quality, shape, refinement
holds boundaries and defenses, defines margins
protecting boundaries from the without, protecting inner resources. but also adaptation to environment, outer climates.
our guardian/Bewacher/Behüter.
quieting, inhibiting, contracting.
skin -- our envelop, protection
between inside and outside
between both -- are moment of stillness - marking beginnings and endings -- leaving some openness, open space - where new emotions, ideas can take shape”
breathing
exhalation and inhalation, esp inhalation
extracting Essence from Breath.
draws in and refines the Qi, sending it downward to nourish our roots with pure Essence.
rhythm of breath, heart beat (Qi <3 Blood)
sets pace, tempo
routine, ritual
regulation of moisture and temperature,
through perspiration/sweating, opening and closing pores
responsible for peripheral circulation
movement: downwards . contraction, pulling in, retracting (vs spring expensive). when yin is bigger than yang.
process: reduction (metall is created through reduction)
body region: chest
senses: distinctly sensitive sense of smell
deflects pathogenic Cold, Wind, Heat
WeiKi
emotional protection
immunity
physical vigor
perfection of form and function,
finishing,
symmetry
like alchemy -- destilling coarse, primitive from. pure, good, fine.
defining and refining.
refinement
austere/ernst
separation, restraint
differentiation, detachment, carving distinctions
cuts through ambiguity, takes away confusion and doubt
sharp
clarity, reflexion: like a sharpened, polished tool. overview, order.
vs
patho: like a mat matt, dulled mirrow. unorder. in need of freshness, like a spring cleaning <3 like phlegm misting the mind <3
endurance/Ausdauer, discipline, persistancy.
(immortality. the wise one.)
personality:
ritualistic
extracting order from chaos.
shapes situations so that others can perform their tasks with elegant precision.
well defined, defining and refining.
difficult to know on a personal level
likes rhythm, dislikes unorder
likes when things go according to plan
correct, fair
chooses safety, control over spontaeity, intimacy
important that others fulfill their obligations, act equitably
secure within. easily distinguishing his thoughts from those around.
neither vulnerable to outside influences/opinions, nor feels like he needs to impose his standards on others.
aesthetic and moral values.
keeper of standards, quality and measures.
providing structure.
defender of virtue, principle, beauty.
master of ceremony and discipline.
immaculate/impeccable, well organized.
has a place for everything, keeps everything in its place.
methodical, efficient, disciplined.
lives according to principle. according to the book.
satisfication: from taking apart and putting back together.
likes sense of order and control.
his gift is designing systems.
commitement to reason.
imbalance personality:
ambiguity/ambivalence, self-doubt, lack of conviction/Überzeugung
critical, judgemental, self-righteous
when schemes arent being followed/derailed -> fall back on rigid adherence to rules, regulations, in an effort to reassert control
perfectionistic. striving for perfection -> can become source of disappointment. noone, including himself can meet standards.
tends to want to bring back order through punishment, prohibition
order, cleanliness turns into disarray/Unordnung
so much stiffness, no openness, everything becomes ritualized routine
can have very strong self-control over own impulses that becomes reserved and remote (vs liver and heart have less command over their impulses, intuition - more naturally, fluent intuition).
soul:
white, like fading bones on the ground.
“Körper-Seele Po”/”corporeal soul/spirit Po - is a spirit that is closely connected to earth.
during our life it becomes in touch with heaven, through the air our lungs breath in, breathing in the most pure, prescious.
then becomes stored in our bones.
then it travels back to earth and stays in earth.
“earth-connected souls”.
holds/includes all 5 of our emotions!
closes the door, rests in stillness (vs Hun(liver soul) wants to experience the world, opening doors)
begraben, Totenruhe, letting bones rest with respect
vs psyche = Hauchseele/Schattenseele(independend of the body)
emotional:
grief, sadness
disappointment!
distant
indifferent
rational, formal
(over)precise, accurate
emotional numbness
remains emotionally distant
doesn´t like to show emotions, private and well-managed
not easily moved esp in company of strangers
mind:
logical
clear, sharp
history:
`cutting, dividing, seperating`
train rails were made of metal which connect, but also weapens which fight
thought of materializing `value` - coins, jewelry
the root question of metall is what the value of life is ,
the question what really is important/what matters most
too much metall-yang — personalities driven by ownership, fame, need for recognition. a little arrogance. inability to feel for the worthiness of others.
wanting to possess something, while grieving for the things that have been lost. suffering from constant awareness/ thought that as everything is transient, fading - things will naturally become lost at some point.
desire, holding something tight, inability to let go on all levels. (for example moaning - not being able to let go of breath effortlessly.
grasping(habsüchtig), only caring and seeing ones own advantage.
antything narcisistic.
vs
too little/metall-yin — personalities who have too little self-worth, self-punishment
large intestine — after the last bits of quality have been drawn out, the large intestine then gets rid of what is left
passed on from parents
patho: weak self-worth. looking for approval from the outside.
the nature of a greengrocer/Händler
bewaring quality
letting go
between letting go and holding on
the lungs, can only function and provide with fresh, pure air, if they are being emptied properly before, if the breath has been let go.
but also if someone is holding on to a memory, object, person without readiness for space, renewal, freshness.
we can´t just stay in autumn, without letting spring come again.
letting go itself needs to be balances, needs to be rhytmic - so not more is let go than held — patho lungs: asthma
balance between holding on to the essential, while letting go of burden = preserving/maintaining Erhalten.
otherwise inner stagnation.
constipation(too much holding on)
or diarrhoe(uncontrollable letting go valuable and valueless
— large intestine
constipated mind:
stubborness, inertia, frozen in ritual
like no fresh wind is blowing, a room without fresh air
physical, organ network lungs in more detail:
together with the
lungs
nutrition,
breath
from the outside
breath is our most necessary nutrient (even more than water, food)
source of Qi
following one´s own rhythm in life, being independent,
`the thought of not in need of so much more than breath from the atmosphere`
patho: smoking, not letting fresh air into a room, lack of walks in fresh air -- polluting ones own pure breath
importance of pure breathing (meditation, Qi Gong,...-practice of breathing)
breath overcomes the boundary between heaven and earth.
`breath` means - being able to receive, without judgement and letting go, without grieving
patho breathing problems/Atemstörungen:
a weakened lung unable to fully empty itself, can not receive enough needed pure, fresh Qi through inspiration
`being out of breath`
fluid-air exchange
sends Qi and fluids down to the lower burner.
patho:
bronchitis, emphysem, cough = bc Qi wasn´t able to go downwards enough, then pressurizing, taking up space of the upper burner.
fluids block the chest -> feeling of fullness in the chest. phlegm is being coughed out.
connection of breath and spirit -- breathing deviations -- we notice when we think of how we breath faster when stressed, when we grieve we sigh, when we feel angry breath feels pressurized. patho like hyperventilation.
when lack of Qi flow - neither Blood nor fluids can flow smoothly nor sufficiently. - joints - become stiff like brittle metal. everything feels crusty.
others:
chronic cough of a child in reaction to environment/outer situations (parents separating->child has to decide which parent, carrying unnatural responsabilities + grief) , esp reoccuring, in the night, strenous - means already on deeper (soul) level
chronic fibrosis of the lungs - which is the hardening of the lung tissues
immunity, defense:
normal: lungs bring our WeiQi (defensive Qi) to the surface of our skin to form a protective shield against pathogenic influences.
patho: shield becomes permeable. -> Qi gets lost through these gaps, pathogens fill these gaps. also emotionally we become “thin-skinned”, vulnerable.
reoccuring respiratory infections.
<3
form, value
between emptiness and fullness
(before, spleen and stomach nourish, digest, assimilate, transform,...)
letting go of unnecessary thoughts, feelings, attachements
feels like loss of control
difficulties with flexibility, relaxation -- rigidity, with-holding -> hardened, rigid envelop/outline of mind and body -> superifical muscles become rigid, deeper muscles of diaphragm & intestines become spastic & tense
constipation, spasms of colon
sensitive to pollution of dull, unpure Qi.
patho: acne, ekzema - shows/indicates that the lungs/metall element are under stress!
feeling like having lost one´s purpose/task out of sight. like our value, our meaning has been narrowed down.
bc our soul/spirit attaches to things -> grief forms
normal: physiologic grief fades after some time
vs
prolonged intense grief: should be treated. cloggs the lungs. resignation. Qi can´t be distributed. stagnation spreads. lack of lightness, liveliness.
(longterm stagnation and resignation slowly growing tumors)
branch: lunch Qi stagnation
patho imbalances:
alters rather with imbalances of the lungs
fullness in the chest (congestion of Lung Qi)
headache (sinus headache)
unrhytmic breathing
mental, emotional distress (reduced emotional protection)
vulnerability to outer pathogens, colds, infection; weakened immunity
accumulation of moisture in upper body -- facial edema, scanty urination below
too much, easy sweating, or missing sweating
uncontrolled urination
phlegm obstructing bronchi, throat, nose, sinuses-> impairs respiration - coughing, asthma, nasal/sinus/throat congestion
shortness of breath, breathlessness
slow healing of skin
skin, (mucous membrane) problems: dry skin, dermatitis, dry hair, mucus membrane, nails, sensitive skin&mucous membranes
allergies (sneeze, cough esp with change of temperature)
imbalances of fluid, venous circulation: varicose veins
disorders of lung, respiratory tract
sensitivity to changes in temperature, climate
rigidity of muscles
constipation, spasms of colon, stiff intestines, inhibited peristalsis
cold extremities, warm chest (poor circulation esp in peripherie)
dry mouth, tongue, throat
reproductive: mid-cycle bleeding; infrequent, scanty periods; tender ovaries, (tender breasts)
stiff posture, spine, neck
(incontinence)
difficulties letting go, with loss of control, too little flexibility; too much rigidity
mental fixation, emotional inhibition (restricts creativity, adaptability)
patho:
respiration & elimination of lungs, skin, intestines interruped -> asthma, constipation, lack of perspiration, dryness of skin, mucus membranes.
asthma & constipation = somatic expressions of inhability to release, exhale, to go with the flow
control -> inhibition of peristalsis, restriced breathing, blunting of sensation & perception. internal stiffening.
if inner stiffness(exaggeration for too long) -> inner, personal collapse -> internal disorder -> decay of personal values, self-definition -> replaced by reliance on outer -> searches for external answers for inner doubts, grief, disappointment; grasping at external rules to anchor his reason. moral confusion, doubt.
sensitivity to odors, changes in temperature -> trigger sneezing, sinus congestion, headaches
sensitivity of skin -> dryness, itching (from exposure to sun, wind,...)
becomes so tight, rigid -> chest becomes overdeveloped, full with stagnant air that can´t be exhaled -> can´t inhale fully either
stiffness -> also emotionally, fixed attituds. difficulties with being flexible, spontaneous.
when insecure -> becomes flat, mechanical to protect feelings
mind: tends to think self-righteousnesly, leaving no space for independent thought. because tries to protect himself against change, disappointment
need to be in control -> adherence to fixed distinctions between good & bad, right & wrong
doesn´t like when smooth running system of her/his life is being distrubed, when regular routine is being disrupted, reluctant to alter habits
critical, judgmental
intense need to differentiate, need to make order
if inner or outer conflict -> the standards, principles break down -> insecurity -> desire to be ruled, mimics his superiors. spiritual search of purpose, (religioussness - putting oneself as truth over others, without being able to judge oneself).
the skin - the envelop of our body - becomes easily penetrable, unable to defend against pernicious emotional, climatic, microbial influences.
impedes the distribution of bodily fluids that are needed to lubricate and soften skin, muscles, mucous membranes.
tender ovaries, pain in ovaries
periods spotty, infrequent
scanty, infrequent periods
coldness of hands and feets, while warmth of abdomen and chest (means that circulation is obstructed - confining the heat to the deep core. bc root patho often in Liver (responsible to move Blood and Qi from the core to the extremities)
patho branches
stagnation of Qi and Blood esp in interior
depletion of Moisture
Accumulation of inner Heat (chest area)
disharmony of Ke (lung-liver, heart-lung)
accumulation of Damp and Cold
Invasion of Wind
Weakness of Sheng (spleen, lung, kidney)
Ernährungslehre
through inhaling toxic substances like pollution
through conditioning, heating
weight loss bc Yin is being used up bc of all the heat
disturbed sleep bc of heat sensations, palms and soles burning from heat
mouth and mucus membranes feel dryed out -> difficulties swallowing
throat inflammation, angina tonsillaris/Mandelentzündung (red, swollen tonsils)
head feels hot, face is red
palpitations, strong fever with feeling of oppression, feeling of sickness, strong restlessness, when heat accumulates in the chest area
kress, apple, carotts, pumpkin, algae, kuzu, cabbage,
poria!! (mushroom) together with lotus (can add cooked lotus seeds into cream)
lotusroot: most important acute herb for wind heat - visually resembles a lung <3
preparation: as soup, rice, congee(Getreidecreme) - cream out of grains prepared with lots of water: millet, barley, rice -> cooling, consolidate Yin, calm the Heat of the Yang
phlegm can travel to lungs -> breathlessness, cough, asthma with phlegm
heat-phlegm (bc Qi-Stagnation)
vs
coldness-phlegm
soil for weakened immune defense
(NOT increased thirst, thirst normal. bc phlegm=moisture, yin itself)
colour: yellow, green or bloody.
consistency: viscous, sticky
tongue: thick yellow coating
also into sinuses (bc sinuses belong to large intestine! where meridian runs) -> sinusitis

NO milk products, meat
->loosen phlegm, rid phlegm
erschöpftes Yin der Lunge
bc chronic use up of Yin - if chronic, reoccuring inflammations, infections, airconditioning, smoking
heat in the lungs
bc / connected to Kidney-Yin deficiency (kidney is responsible for whole body Yin):
Kidney-Yin deficiency -> Lung-heat, Lung-Yin deficiency
signs:
cough WITHOUT mucus/phlegm expectoration - dry, (spasmic) cough, bc no fluids left

tongue: very red, but without a coat(bc Yin-deficiency)
intense thirst (often for cold water)
(kidney): strong exhaustion
chest pain
in afternoon:
fever
heat sensations and dryness on palms and soles
vs

signs:
exhaustion
breathlessness
listlessness/Antriebslosigkeit
constipation, agglomerations in the body
sweating even with slight exertion
overweight (bc try to fill up/compensate missing fresh Qi from Breath, with Qi from nutrients) -> phlegm, moisture -> soil for weakened immune defense. often reoccuring colds with phlegm in airways.

RELATIONSHIPS:
lungs <3 liver:
vs
lungs — wants restriction, holding tight.
between creating something new
vs
preserving something traditional
tension, fight between the two, even inner fight
between inhibition and excitation
heart <3 lungs
between merged and distinct
when passion and empathy (heart) meets mindfulness and right action (lungs) -> kind mind
patho relationships:
upward(liver) and downward(lungs), circulation of Qi
Qi in the chest in need of loosening -> liver can´t perform its function of distributing Blood throughout chest, breasts, abdomen
affect the outline of the body, opening and closing, tightening and loosening, pores, sweat glands, vessels
circulation is obstructed (bc root patho often in Liver (responsible to move Blood and Qi from the core to the extremities) - confining the heat to the deep core -> coldness of hands and feets, while warmth of abdomen and chest
if too much lung: contraction of skin & depression of movement of peripheral circulation -> warmth, Moisture, Qi and Blood to the body´s core. = suppression of Qi leads to lack of motility + trapped Heat can cause Dryness bc of evaporation of fluids => contributes to constipation, asthma
this `entrapped heat`-> can also cause inflammation, irritation like in laryngitis, sinusitis, dermatitis, ileitis, colitis, urethritis
heart type: Qi is always at the surface, is flushed, warm, sweats readily
vs
lungs type: Qi/energy is contained deeper within, pale complexion, skin cool, tight, dry, rarely sweats - thus also difficult to rid oneself of toxicity or negativity - retention of physical and mental wastes which accumulate -> congeal into tumors, or constrinct the emotional field, diminishing capacity for feeling, responsiveness.
if too much lungs -> to little liver
if too much lung -> fire becomes drained
if too much lungs -> spleen becomes tired
as moisture of life fades -> body becomes fixed, calused/hornig, lifeless - skin is tight, perspiration is `as scarce as rain in the desert`
if defenses are overhwelmed -> infection may penetrate quickly to the interior of the body -> high fevers while evaporation of perspiration is missing -> can´t cool the intense heat -> under these circumstances even what started as a regular cold/flu could develop into severe bronchitis or pneumonia
<3
